Ghana captain Andre Ayew reveals desire to win AFCON or World Cup

Former Swansea City and West Ham star Andre Ayew has said his only target is to win a trophy with Ghana.

The Black Stars captain wants to win either the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) or the World Cup before retiring from the national team.

Ayew will tie Asamoah Gyan as Ghana’s most capped player if he plays in Tuesday’s friendly against Nicaragua. The Al Sadd forward debuted for the Black Stars in 2007 and has played 108 games, scoring 23 goals.

With 10 goals in the Afcon, Ayew is Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, but he has yet to win a trophy with the senior national team, suffering heartbreaking defeats in two finals.

Ayew played in Ghana’s 2010 Afcon final loss to Egypt and wept five years later when Ghana lost on penalties to Ivory Coast in the Afcon final.

“For myself, to be real, I don’t have personal targets. The only personal target I had— and still have — since I joined the Black Stars was to win a trophy with the team,” Ayew told Graphic Sports.

“That’s my only target and I’ve been close a number of times (the 2010 AFCON and 2015 AFCON final).

“I won the Under-20 AFCON and won the Under-20 World Cup trophies, but my only target is to win a trophy in the Black Stars jersey, any trophy that I can win — AFCON or the World Cup trophy. That’s my goal, that’s my aim and that’s what I pray and work hard for every day.”

Ayew will captain Ghana at this year’s World Cup in Qatar, where the Black Stars will face Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay in the group stage.
