Ghana midfielder Andre Ayew has branded Comoros a tough side despite a 2-0 win on Tuesday at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi, to reach the final round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
A goal in each half was enough for the Black Stars to book a place at the ultimate round of the continental qualifiers after the homers struggled to completely impose themselves on the game they were expected to easily win.
Midfielder Mubarak Wakaso and Jordan Ayew scored to ensure that despite the lack of shine in the Stars’s performance, they could still march on. Wakaso sent Ghana into the lead on 18 minutes with a superbly taken free-kick just on the edge of the 18-yard box to lighten up the mood at the stadium.
Ayew told kessbenfm.com “I am very happy that we won this game. It was a difficult game but in the end, we were able to secure the most important thing by winning this match”.
Despite the huge difference in pedigree between the two sides, ‘Les Cœlacanthethe’ as the Islanders are nicknamed put in a great shift that earned them respect all round.
The Swansea midfielder said he was relieved that the Black Stars whip their campaign for a fourth successive World Cup appearance in line with the victory following a goalless draw in the first leg.
“We hope to build on this victory and get more victories in our subsequent games so we can qualify to the World Cup,” Ayew said.
Ghana join 19 other winners from the second round to the group stages of the qualifiers where four teams will be pitted together in a group of five with the winners automatically qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia
