It is not that wrong to refer to herbalists as doctors, but it should be indicated that they are herbal doctors – Wofa Kofi Appiah

Renowned radio presenter Wofa Kofi Appiah shared his perspective on the use of the term “herbal doctors” and its relevance in today’s society.
Speaking on Kessben Maakye on Wednesday, he asserted that while it may not be entirely wrong to refer to herbalists as doctors, it is essential to clarify that they are “herbal doctors.” This distinction, he argues, ensures that there is a clear understanding of the nature of their practice while respecting the rich tradition of herbal medicine.
Herbal medicine has been a cornerstone of traditional healthcare systems in many cultures, including in Ghana, where it is deeply rooted in the history and daily lives of its people.
Over the years, herbal remedies have gained increasing popularity as people seek alternative treatments for a range of health conditions.
In some cases, herbal treatments are viewed as safer or more natural compared to conventional medicine. However, as herbal practices evolve and gain recognition, it becomes crucial to have accurate terminology that reflects the scope and expertise of those involved in this field.
Wofa Kofi Appiah’s point centers on the importance of differentiating between the term “doctor” and other professional titles, especially in a medical context. While herbalists play an integral role in the healthcare system, particularly in rural and underserved areas, He emphasizes that their qualifications and training differ from those of conventional medical doctors.
