President Mahama to Lead AU Summit in Accra to Accelerate Fight Against AIDS and Health Inequality
President John Dramani Mahama will host the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Accra from July 21 to 22, 2026.
The summit will bring together African leaders and key stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen healthcare systems and accelerate Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across the continent.
The first day will focus on a technical meeting involving officials from Ministries of Health, Finance and Development Planning, while the second day will see Heads of State deliberate and adopt key decisions on Africa’s health priorities, including the AU Roadmap to 2030.
In a statement, President Mahama’s spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said Ghana’s decision to host the summit demonstrates the country’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery and leading continental health reforms.
He highlighted initiatives including the Free Primary Health Care Programme, expansion of access under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), and the establishment of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCares.
President Mahama is also expected to highlight Ghana’s investments in health infrastructure, healthcare workforce development, emergency preparedness and local pharmaceutical manufacturing.
The summit will also feature a side event on maternal, newborn, child and adolescent survival, led by Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the AU Champion for Maternal and Child Health, in partnership with the Accra Reset.
The Government of Ghana has welcomed participating leaders and stakeholders, reaffirming its commitment to working with the AU to advance Universal Health Coverage and improve health outcomes across Africa.
