Ashaiman Assembly Intensifies Waste Segregation Drive to Improve Sanitation

The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly is set to introduce waste segregation at source and strengthen sanitation law enforcement to improve cleanliness in the municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Freeman Tsekpo, announced the measures after leading a two-day post-flood clean-up exercise, where he expressed concern over indiscriminate waste disposal.

He said previous clean-up campaigns and desilting exercises had provided only temporary solutions due to the municipality’s growing population and increasing commercial activities.

Mr Tsekpo explained that the Assembly would now focus on an integrated waste management system involving waste segregation, recycling and improved refuse collection.

He disclosed that the Assembly was partnering with private recycling companies, including a plastic recycling firm and Safisana, to establish a sustainable waste management programme.

The MCE also announced plans to engage residents, businesses and waste management operators through a sanitation stakeholders’ forum. He revealed that more than 70 tricycles had been registered to support waste collection across the municipality.

He warned informal waste collectors who dump refuse at unauthorised locations that the Assembly would enforce sanitation by-laws. Under the “Operation Clean Your Frontage” initiative, property owners and businesses are required to keep their surroundings clean.

Mr Tsekpo expressed optimism that improved waste practices, public cooperation and stronger enforcement would help transform Ashaiman into a cleaner municipality.
