KGL Foundation completes renovation of Accra Psychiatric Hospital OPD to boost mental healthcare delivery

The KGL Foundation has completed and commissioned a full renovation of the Out-Patient Department (OPD) Centre at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, marking a major step in efforts to improve mental healthcare delivery and patient experience in Ghana.

The newly upgraded facility was officially opened last Thursday in a ceremony attended by key stakeholders in the country’s mental health sector. The project forms part of the Foundation’s broader corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at creating more welcoming, dignified, and patient-friendly environments for individuals seeking mental health services across the country.

“Physical environment matters in treatment and recovery” – KGL Foundation CEO
Speaking at the commissioning, Chief Executive Officer of the KGL Foundation, Mr. Elliot Dadey, said the intervention was driven by the urgent need to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s mental health sector while encouraging more corporate and philanthropic investment.

According to Mr. Dadey, the condition of healthcare infrastructure plays a direct role in how patients respond to treatment.

“The physical condition of healthcare facilities plays a critical role in the treatment and recovery of patients,” he stated. “We are confident that this upgraded facility will provide a more conducive environment for both patients and healthcare professionals, thereby improving the quality of care offered at the hospital.”

He added that mental health remains an essential pillar of national development and called on other corporate institutions and philanthropic organizations to support efforts aimed at strengthening mental healthcare infrastructure.

Mr. Dadey reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to implementing interventions that positively impact vulnerable groups and contribute to sustainable national development.

Hospital director: Renovation reduces stigma, improves safety

Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, commended the KGL Foundation for the transformation, describing it as a significant upgrade that has improved both the hospital’s image and its operational environment.

Dr. Obeng explained that the refurbished OPD centre has enhanced safety and comfort within consulting rooms while creating a more welcoming atmosphere for patients, visitors, and healthcare personnel.

He noted that the physical facelift is also helping to address one of the biggest barriers to mental healthcare in Ghana: stigma.

“The improvement in the physical environment is encouraging more people to seek professional mental health support and helping to change public perceptions about psychiatric care,” Dr. Obeng said. “When a facility looks dignified and well-maintained, it tells patients that their condition is taken seriously.”

*Stakeholders welcome investment in mental health infrastructure*
The commissioning ceremony brought together leaders and clinicians from across the mental health sector, including the Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Authority, Dr. Eugene Dordoye; Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Susan Seffah; Head of Public Relations and Deputy Clinical Coordinator, Dr. Peggy Asiedu Ekremet; Director of Administration at the Mental Health Authority, Mr. Victus Kpesese; and Deputy Director, Mr. Emmanuel Hanson Torde.

Their presence underscored the growing recognition of mental health as a national priority and the importance of public-private partnerships in expanding access to care.

The renovated OPD is expected to handle a significant volume of patients daily and will serve as a model for how improved infrastructure can boost service delivery, patient experience, and public confidence in psychiatric care.

With mental health conditions affecting millions of Ghanaians, stakeholders say investments like this are critical to closing gaps in treatment access and changing long-held societal attitudes toward mental illness.
