“Owusu Bempah Has Demonstrated He Is Not A Christian” — Hon. Joseph Cudjoe Condemns ‘Curse’ On NPP Supporters
Former Minister for Public Enterprise and former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effia Constituency, Hon. Joseph Cudjoe, has condemned Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah over threats to curse NPP supporters and “collapse” the party ahead of the 2028 elections, saying the preacher’s conduct is not in line with Christian teachings.
In a statement titled “A Christian Response to the Politics of Curses, Religious Intolerance, and Political Intimidation”, Hon. Cudjoe said he was speaking “not merely as an NPP member, but as a Christian who believes the ultimate standard for Christian conduct is Jesus Christ Himself.”
“WHERE WAS CHRIST IN THAT MESSAGE?”
Rev. Owusu Bempah has publicly declared he will curse NPP supporters, ensure anyone voting for the NPP in 2028 is cursed alongside their descendants, and work to collapse the party. He links the action to his 2013 arrest.
Hon. Cudjoe said while the Reverend has a right to seek justice through proper institutions, “personal grievance does not give a Reverend minister authority to curse millions of citizens and their children.”
He quoted scripture to make his case:
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” Matthew 5:44
“Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you” Luke 6:28
“Reverend Owusu Bempah’s declarations are impossible to reconcile with the teachings of Christ,” Hon. Cudjoe wrote. “A true Christian does not live in fear of another person’s curse. The biblical meaning of ‘back to sender’ is simply that a curse has no power over a faithful believer.”
He added that he will “pray for Reverend Owusu Bempah to turn his heart from wicked ways” and urged other Christians to do same.
“NON-CHRISTIAN DOES NOT MEAN EVIL”
The MP also rejected the notion that non-Christians are inherently evil, citing world leaders and innovators who are not Christian.
He listed UAE’s Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Indonesia’s Prabowo Subianto, China’s Xi Jinping, Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu as non-Christian leaders of major nations. He also named Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk and others as non-Christians behind global technologies.
“If non-Christians are evil, why rely on their technology, smartphones, and digital platforms?” he asked. “To know the evil ones, look at their fruits. Jesus declared, ‘By their fruit you will recognize them'” — Matthew 7:16.
“GHANA IS A SECULAR STATE, NOT A RELIGIOUS MONOPOLY”
Hon. Cudjoe stressed that Ghana’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion and that the presidency “does not belong exclusively to Christians.”
“Ghana Is a Constitutional Democracy, not a Religious Monopoly,” he wrote, noting that even Israel, the homeland of Jesus, is not a Christian state.
He argued that national development depends on “sound policy, leadership, education, discipline, and accountability; not a leader’s religious faith,” pointing to the progress of UAE, Japan, China, and Israel.
“JESUS DIED FOR SALVATION, NOT POLITICAL PARTIES”
The former Minister warned against reducing Christ’s mission to partisan politics.
“Jesus said, ‘My kingdom is not of this world’ John 18:36. He died to reconcile humanity to God, not to secure electoral victories for the NPP or NDC. Political choices are not salvation, and political opponents are not enemies.”
Citing Matthew 7:15, he cautioned against “false prophets” and said every message must be tested by its fruit: “does it produce love or hatred, peace or fear, unity or division?”
In 2028, Hon. Cudjoe said the election “will be decided through democratic processes under God’s sovereign will; certainly not Owusu Bempah’s declarations.”
“So, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia will campaign, persuade, pray, and the good people of Ghana will vote. If God wills the NPP to win, no curse can prevent it; if God wills otherwise, no human can overturn it.”
He concluded: “God is bigger than the NPP, Christ is bigger than Ghanaian politics, and salvation is bigger than any election.”
