Most Mobilemoney fraudsters collaborate with sacked telecom employees – Rev. Vincent Kankam (Sofo Kankam) draws big attention

Reverend Vincent Kankam, has raised serious concerns about the alarming rise of mobile money fraud in Ghana. According to him, many of the fraudsters operate in collaboration with former employees of telecom companies, a development he described as a “national security concern.”
Speaking on the show, Rev. Kankam suggested that the sophistication with which fraudsters carry out mobile money scams cannot be attributed to ordinary criminal ingenuity alone.
Rather, he claims, many fraudsters receive inside help, particularly from disgruntled or sacked telecom workers who still retain or have accessed confidential customer data.
“It’s not magic how these people get your full name, ID number, mobile money balance, and even your last transaction. Some of them are working closely with people who were once inside the system, some of whom were sacked but still hold on to key access or knowledge,” Rev. Kankam explained.
He emphasized that this inside collaboration is one of the main reasons why fraudsters are able to trick unsuspecting Ghanaians into disclosing sensitive information or making fake payments.
Rev. Kankam called on the telecom industry to take internal security more seriously, particularly in the management of personnel and data access systems. He questioned how it is possible for unauthorized individuals to continue accessing privileged information even after their employment has been terminated.
He further urged telcos to audit their internal systems, enhance data security protocols, and track down former employees who may be exploiting their insider knowledge to aid criminal networks.
While urging corporate accountability, Rev. Kankam also reiterated the importance of public education. He advised mobile money users to be cautious when receiving unexpected calls or messages and to avoid sharing PINs or personal details under any circumstances.
