It’s very sad to see strikers now win Goalking in Ghana League with 14-15 goals in a 34-game league, at least they should score around 30 goals – Hamza Mohammed

Former Asante Kotoko midfielder and now head coach of Ghana’s U-19 football team, Hamza Mohammed, has voiced concern over the declining goal-scoring standards in the Ghana Premier League.

Speaking on Kessben TV, the former Black Stars player expressed disappointment at the current trend where the league’s top scorers often referred to as “Goal Kings” are finishing the season with only 14 or 15 goals.

“It is very sad,” Hamzah said plainly. “In a league where teams play 34 matches, we should be seeing strikers winning the Goal King title with at least 30 goals.”

He questioned the level of finishing and attacking intent among forwards in the league, suggesting a possible decline in striker development or tactical emphasis on attacking football. “What are we doing with our strikers?” he asked. “With 34 games, if a striker is averaging just one goal every two or three games, how can that be the best in the league?”

Hamza’s remarks also come with a strong implication that Ghana needs to take a deeper look at its youth development systems, especially in grooming natural goal scorers.

As the current coach of the Ghana U-19 side, he emphasized that this issue starts at the grassroots and must be addressed with deliberate coaching and training.
