Gov’t concludes evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa – Ablakwa

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that government has concluded its evacuation exercise following the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

This follows the arrival of the last batch of 41 Ghanaians on Friday, September 4, 2026.

According to the Minister, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, nearly 2,000 Ghanaian citizens who voluntarily registered for evacuation have been brought back home.

He disclosed that the remains of two Ghanaians who were attacked and killed during the unrest were also repatriated, while one returnee died upon arrival in Accra, bringing the total number of deaths recorded in connection with the evacuation to three since May 2026.

Addressing the final batch of 41 returnees upon their arrival in Accra on September 4, Mr. Ablakwa expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaians wherever they may be in the world.

The Minister assured that government will continue to monitor the situation and provide the necessary support for the reintegration of the returnees.
