History vindicates CJ Baffoe-Bonnie; Past Chief Justices supported Akufo-Addo flagship – Deputy CEO NHIA
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Finance and Investment at the National Health Insurance Authority, Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobiri Esq., has defended Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie over his recent comments in support of President John Dramani Mahama’s reset agenda.
In a statement issued on September 4, 2026, Ms. Bogobiri described the attacks on the Chief Justice as hypocritical and historically dishonest, insisting that similar statements were made by past Chief Justices under former President Nana Akufo-Addo and were hailed as nation-building.
According to her, the facts are verifiable and on public record.
She recalled that in March 2018, then Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, at the 181st Speech and Prize-giving Day of Wesley Girls’ High School in Cape Coast, commended government for implementing the Free SHS policy and called on stakeholders to support it.
Ms. Bogobiri noted that the story was headlined by GhanaWeb as “Chief Justice calls for support for Free SHS” and by Kasapa FM as “CJ calls for support for Free SHS”, pointing out that Free SHS was the flagship programme of President Akufo-Addo at the time.
“While commending government for the brave step in implementing Free SHS, she said it calls for periodic fine-tuning and called on teachers, administrators, parents and guardians to give their wholehearted support as vital partners for its survival and sustenance,” Ms. Bogobiri quoted Justice Akuffo as saying.
She argued that no one called for her removal or accused her of partisanship at the time.
Ms. Bogobiri further stated that the 1992 Constitution guarantees every Ghanaian, including Justices of the Superior Courts, the right to hold opinions on matters of national interest, and that calling for collective support for a national development agenda is not partisan politics but patriotism.
“The Judicial Oath requires Judges to be impartial in adjudicating cases before them, not to be silent robots on national development. Chief Justices in other democracies routinely comment on national progress,” she said.
She added that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie was not speaking from the bench but as a statesman encouraging citizens to support a development agenda he believes will benefit Ghana.
“If it was nation-building when Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo called for support for Free SHS, then it is also nation-building when Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie calls for support for President Mahama’s reset agenda that seeks to benefit all Ghanaians. The standard must be the same. The President’s success is Ghana’s success. Ghana first,” the statement concluded.
