Odotobri MP Hon Anthony Mmieh critiques NDC’s 24-Hour Economy Policy as unfeasible without clear blueprint

Hon. Anthony Mmieh, the Member of Parliament for Odotobri, has expressed skepticism regarding the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proposed 24-hour economy policy. Speaking in an interview on Kessben FM, Hon Mmieh acknowledged the policy’s appeal but questioned its practicality, citing the absence of a detailed implementation plan.
The NDC’s 24-hour economy initiative aims to extend business operations beyond traditional hours, promoting continuous economic activity. While the policy’s objectives include boosting productivity and creating jobs, critics argue that its success hinges on addressing several foundational challenges.
A significant concern is the current state of Ghana’s infrastructure and energy supply. Experts highlight that without reliable electricity and well-developed infrastructure, sustaining a 24-hour economy is challenging. For instance, the World Bank has noted issues related to power outages and high electricity costs in Ghana, which could impede the feasibility of operating businesses around the clock.
Another critical factor is the demand for goods and services during non-traditional hours. Analysts point out that a 24-hour economy is only viable if there is sufficient consumer demand to justify extended operating hours. Without strategies to stimulate this demand, the policy may not achieve its intended economic benefits.
In light of these concerns, Hon Mmieh emphasizes the need for a comprehensive blueprint detailing how the 24-hour economy policy will be implemented.
Such a plan should address infrastructure development, energy supply, and strategies to stimulate consumer demand. Without these critical components, the policy risks remaining an unfulfilled aspiration.
