Dr. Bryan Acheampong to Ken Agyapong & NPP: “Action the verb UNITY” as 2028 rebuild begins

Former Food & Agric Minister appeals for healing, defends Bawumia, says party must put 2024 defeat behind it

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has appealed to Hon. Kennedy Agyapong and all NPP members to “lay down the weapons of internal warfare” and rally behind flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of 2028.

In a statement dated 19/06/2026, Dr. Acheampong, who also contested the January 2026 primaries and lost, said he understands the weight of disappointment from a hard-fought campaign. He urged Ken Agyapong to “lower the temperature” and use his influence for healing, not division.

“I lost too”
Speaking “not as a bystander but as one who stood in it”, Dr. Acheampong drew on his own primary loss to connect with Ken’s camp. He acknowledged that “a few voices around the flagbearers and even my own campaign directed disrespect and sometimes insults at Hon. Agyapong that were unworthy of our tradition”.

But he was quick to defend Dr. Bawumia, stating there is “no evidence that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned, directed or endorsed those attacks”. He said the individuals responsible had “their own long-standing grievances” with Ken that were personal, not party-driven.

2028 over grievances
With the NPP still reeling from the 2024 defeat, Dr. Acheampong said the party’s only mission now is to “rebuild, to reunite, and to return to power”.

“Nothing! no grievance, no provocation, no personal quarrel can be allowed to stand above that mission. Every day we spend fighting one another is a day we hand freely to our opponents,” he warned.

He admitted harsh words were exchanged “in more than one direction” during the primaries, including from Ken himself, but called for mutual grace: “those who wounded Ken, and Ken himself might find the grace to make peace, without anyone waiting for the other to move first.

”Rally behind the flagbearer
Dr. Acheampong stressed that Dr. Bawumia “is now the candidate of all of us” and carries the mandate of every member who voted for Ken, for himself, and for other aspirants.

“To rally around him is not to take a side in anyone’s personal feud; it is to defend the party that is bigger than all of us,” he wrote.

He concluded with a direct appeal to Ken Agyapong, his supporters, and his own: “So, I appeal… let us lay down the weapons of internal warfare. Action the verb UNITY. And let us close ranks behind our flagbearer so that in 2028 we restore the New Patriotic Party to the service of the people of Ghana.”“Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win,” he added.
