“We Will Resist This Political Witch-Hunt” – NPP’s lawyer Enoch Afoakwa Fires at NDC Government
By Maurice Otoo
A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Enoch Afoakwa, has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of engaging in what he describes as a “political witch-hunt,” warning that the opposition party will deploy every legitimate means to resist intimidation.
Speaking on recent political developments, Lawyer Afoakwa argued that, if Ghana is a sovereign state, how wrong it is to involve the diplomatic community in domestic political matters.
“If NDC thinks we are a sovereign country, then running to the diplomatic community is wrong; then they should withdraw from all international relations if that is their position,” he stated.
He maintained that Ghana is already signatory to several international human rights conventions and therefore cannot ignore alleged abuses that may breach international standards.
“Every issue may be domestic, but once it breaches international laws, we will rise against it,” he stressed.
The NPP legal practitioner also warned that his party would not remain silent until the situation worsens before reacting.
“We will not sit for things to escalate before we react,” he cautioned.
Drawing comparisons with the NDC’s time in opposition, Lawyer Afoakwa claimed the party previously sought support from international bodies, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to press home its concerns.
“NDC in opposition did the same. They even went to the IMF and other international communities to address their case,” he alleged.
According to him, some international stakeholders have already assured the NPP of their cooperation regarding concerns being raised.
He further alleged that some individuals linked to the opposition have recently faced arrests and intimidation, insisting the party would strongly oppose any perceived political persecution.
“We will assemble all tools to resist this political witch-hunt,” he declared.
Lawyer Afoakwa added that the NPP would continue to aggressively confront the government whenever necessary to demonstrate its displeasure over actions it considers unfair or unconstitutional.
