A former Attorney General, Joseph Ayikoi Otoo has denied media reports that non-Akan members within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are “ostracized and sidelined” within the party.
Media reports suggested that Mr Ayikoi Otoo, who is also vying for the chairmanship slot in the party has advised the party leadership to quit isolating the NPP’s non-Akan members to help shed the widely held perception that the party was solely for the Akan ethnic group
But speaking on Eye Witness News, Mr Ayikoi Otoo denied those allegations adding that he had not granted any media house an interview in that regard.
“I’m sorry the media got everything wrong. I was only addressing TESCON members on the election petition at Cape Coast when we had an open forum and somebody asked a question on how the party was addressing disunity within the clan and I just responded to that question in that context.”
He noted that “his response was just a direct explanation to a question asked.”
“I just said this was a propaganda that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is using against us so we should not give credence to this propaganda by our own actions. I do not know where all these allegations are coming from.
I did not even know that media houses were around to confer the program since I was just addressing TESCON students but unknowingly some media houses had recorded general comments I made earlier. I declined all the interviews so I don’t have any idea about this issue,”he added
Citing an example in that regard, he said: “If you don’t market the NPP to the people of Accra then people will think the party falls within only the Akan tribe”
