Mahama commissions 85-bed ward complex at Police Hospital

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned an 85-bed ward complex at the Police Hospital in Accra as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen the welfare of personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
The new facility is expected to increase the hospital’s capacity to provide timely and quality medical care to police officers injured in the line of duty, as well as members of the general public who seek treatment at the hospital.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama said the investment reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that officers who risk their lives to protect the country receive the healthcare and support they need.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the Police Management Board for their leadership in delivering the project, which he said was an important step towards improving the welfare of serving officers.
President Mahama recalled that he had discussed the need to prioritise police welfare with the IGP during Police Remembrance Day activities at the Police Training School in Tesano nearly a year earlier.
He said the new ward complex was a tangible outcome of that commitment, adding that the demanding and often dangerous nature of police work made access to appropriate healthcare essential for officers’ physical and mental well-being.
The President disclosed that seven officers injured in the line of duty at Bunkpurugu and Potor were already receiving treatment in the newly commissioned facility.
He said the complex had the necessary facilities to support their care, underscoring the importance of having adequate medical infrastructure to respond to emergencies involving police personnel.
President Mahama also urged hospital management and health professionals to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical practice, stressing that the quality of care provided would determine the long-term value of the investment.
He further announced plans to allocate approximately GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the broader Police Hospital expansion project, which has been delayed for 22 years.
According to him, the completion of the project, expected by the end of 2027, will add another 106 beds to the hospital, bringing its total capacity to more than 300 beds. The expanded facility will include an intensive care unit, an accident and emergency centre, diagnostic equipment and additional surgical theatres.
The President also donated two ambulances to the Police Hospital to strengthen emergency response and facilitate the transportation of injured officers and other patients requiring urgent medical attention.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving police welfare, announcing that he had asked the Minister of Finance to provide GH¢300 million in the 2027 Budget for the construction of 250 new police apartments to ease congestion in barracks.
President Mahama urged health professionals to treat every patient with dignity, compassion and professionalism, noting that investment in the health and welfare of police officers was also an investment in the country’s security.
