Mahama announces GH¢200m to complete Police Hospital expansion

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to allocate approximately GH¢200 million in the 2027 Budget to complete the long-delayed Police Hospital expansion project, which has been stalled for 22 years.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new 85-bed block at the Police Hospital in Accra, President Mahama said the government had decided to bring the contract with the original contractor to an end following prolonged disagreements and cost overruns.
He said the government would take responsibility for completing the project to ensure that the hospital could provide more comprehensive healthcare services to police officers and members of the public.
“The contract has been going on for 22 years. We have finally brought it to an end. We are going to complete it ourselves,” he said.
President Mahama explained that the completion of the expansion project, expected by the end of 2027, would add another 106 beds to the hospital, increasing its total bed capacity to more than 300.
The expanded facility will include a 12-bed intensive care unit, a new accident and emergency centre, 11 consulting rooms and four paediatric consulting rooms.
It will also be equipped with MRI and CT scan machines, three general surgical theatres, an orthopaedic theatre and an endoscopy unit. The project will further provide a mortuary with a capacity of 222 bodies.
The President said the investment formed part of the government’s broader commitment to improving the welfare of police officers and strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
He noted that officers who risk their lives to protect the public deserved access to timely and quality medical care, particularly when they sustained injuries in the line of duty.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama also donated two ambulances to the Police Hospital to strengthen emergency response and facilitate the safe transportation of injured officers and other patients requiring urgent medical attention.
He urged the hospital’s management to maintain high standards of hygiene, patient safety and clinical care to ensure that the new facilities and future expansion delivered lasting benefits.
The commissioning of the 85-bed block marks another step in efforts to improve the hospital’s capacity while the government works towards completing the wider expansion project.
