Doctors to suspend emergency services on Monday

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has given indication it would activate the second stage of their strike if their grievances are not addressed by close of day Monday April 22 .

According to the General Secretary of the Association, Dr. Frank Serebour, if doctors did not get a solution to their issues, they will activate the second phase of their strike; suspend service to emergencies.

“Come Monday, if the issues have not been resolved, we will withdraw emergency services. By Monday, close of day 12 midnight, we will active the second stage of our action.”

Dr. Serebour added that striking doctors could be coerced to work no matter the outcome of a suit challenging their 3 week strike.

A private legal practitioner, Tuinese Edward Amuzu has filed a writ at the human rights court challenging the legality of the strike.

In his opinion, it flouts the Labour Act.

The General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association tells Citi News, although the Association was yet to be served with the writ, the developments come to them as no surprise.

“This not the first time somebody has filed a writ against us for embarking on a strike action. They can file, we have our lawyers. Our lawyers will meet him in court and then they will battle it in court.”

“Nobody can force us to work; we are not worried at all,” he iterated.
