The General Secretaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah also known as Gen Mosquito and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as Sir John says their party members are satisfied with comments they have been making; hence they will not stop.
The media have been asked to blacklist the two for making comments some claim to be false representations of what is truly happens at the Supreme Court. Both men have been speaking to the media since the Supreme Court started hearing the substantive case of the Election Petition on Tuesday.
The Ghana Journalists Association for instance, called on the media to stop giving mileage to the intemperate words of the two general secretaries; likewise a former president of the Greater Accra regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association, Sam Akudzeto and the Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance, Dr Emmanuel Akwetey.
To them, it will be better for the two gentlemen to keep quiet as far as the case at the Supreme Court is concerned.
However, speaking in an interview on Peace News @ 6pm, both General Secretaries disagreed.
Gen Mosquito says as a leading member of the NDC in court, he has the right to explain issues to his party members who might not fully understand what goes on in the courtroom.
“I am leading my party in court and so cannot stop talking about this issue; no NDC member has asked me to stop. They are rather encouraging me to go on and explain to Ghanaians everything that happens” he said.
He pointed out that if the NPP does not like the way Sir John is talking, they should be bold to tell him instead of ‘adding me to the equation and branding all of us as one’.
“It is not right for them to ask the media to blacklist both of us because of comments we may have made; moreover, if you critically look into issues, Sir John and I don’t have the same standing in court. I am leading my party and will be in the witness box to speak on their behalf, whereas Sir John is not even part of the petitioners. As for me I am just looking for the interest of the party to win the case,” Gen Mosquito added.
Sir John, on his part said, “I don’t know their basis for making those comments because they are the same people appearing on radio and television stations talking about the court case and even insulting the Chief Justice. My people are happy that I am interpreting what happens at the Supreme Court and I will go on with it. As for me, I will not pay attention to those people…I will continue to give hope to our members that Nana Addo will win.”
