Doctors strike: Patients stranded at hospitals

Sick people who went to public hospitals across the country were today turned away as doctors attended to only emergency patients and patients on admission.

Checks at the Tamale Teaching Hospital shows that doctors have complied with the directive of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) to embark on strike.

In an interview with Citi Newsthe Public Relations Officer for the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Gabriel Nii Ottu Ankrah stated that the doctors are attending to in patients and emergency cases.

“They are working but they are not attending to outpatients and cases that are not of emergency. We have put in a measure so that the impact will not be so much” he said.

Meanwhile, the situation is not different in the Ashanti Region.

As the GMA has declared that it would not attend to outpatient cases.

Although have been trooping in and out of the hospital.

According to Citi News correspondent Hawa Iddrisu there have been three dead bodies that have been sent to the morgue at the Okomfo Anokye hospital.

Some of the relatives of the deceased expressed disappoint at the government for not taking any steps to address the concerns of the doctors causing the death of their family members.

However Doctors in the Eastern Region are not complying fully with the directive.

According to Citi News Eastern Regional correspondent; Kwame Appiah Kubi most medical doctors are still at post attending to both in and out patients.

According to the doctors, although they agree with their colleagues in principle, the prevailing circumstances as well as the communities in which they find themselves, it will be a lot of disservice if they embark on strike.

They added that looking at the income level of the people it would be extremely difficult for them to afford any health care bills at a private facility.

They further stated that the region doesn’t have enough private hospitals and so if they should comply with the directive it would affect them seriously.
