Ghana to champion continental integration, peace and AfCFTA under AU chairmanship – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will use its upcoming chairmanship of the African Union (AU) to advance continental integration, accelerate the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and promote peace and security across Africa.

Addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said Ghana would also work towards ensuring that Africa speaks with a united voice on the global stage.

He said Ghana’s AU chairmanship, which begins in January 2027, would provide an opportunity to contribute to efforts aimed at addressing some of the continent’s pressing challenges.

President Mahama outlined continental integration, AfCFTA implementation, peace and security in conflict zones, and a stronger collective African voice as key areas Ghana intends to prioritise.

He also called for greater international cooperation in addressing conflicts and other challenges facing the global community.

According to him, the crises confronting the world can be resolved, but this requires political commitment and a shared sense of humanity among nations.

President Mahama urged world leaders to move beyond viewing one another primarily as strategic competitors, economic rivals or demographic threats and instead recognise their shared humanity.
