The president’s request is laudable: P.C Appiah Ofori

Anti-graft legislator, Hon. P.C. Appiah Ofori has described as a good thing, President Mahama’s order directing the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning not to pay the new salaries approved for officials of the Executive arm of government.
Parliament recently approved that the President be paid 12,000 cedis as salary. The Vice President is expected to receive 10,500 cedis while Ministers and Deputies are to be paid between 8000 and 9000 Ghana cedis.
The new salaries sparked outrage among anti-corruption campaigners such as PC Appiah Ofori and Vitus Azeem of the Ghana Integrity Initiative.
A statement from the the presidency on Sunday said, President Mahama has asked the Ministry of Finance to stop the payment while parliament reviews the salaries.
Appiah Ofori told XYZ News the president’s request to Parliament to review the new salaries will save his government a lot of labour agitation.
Meanwhile, the ruling party’s National Organiser Yaw Boateng also told XYZ News that the president could not have stood aloof as millions of Ghana cedis are dished out of the nation’s coffers to pay salaries of government officials, thus his decision to halt the payment.
