Outspoken Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby has jabbed his party Chair, Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, describing his response to the Ghana Bar Association as disingenuous.
The GBA on Thursday issued a statement urging the NPP to rescind the decision to withdraw its MPs on the Appointments Committee of Parliament, from taking part in the vetting of ministerial nominees by the President.
In a response letter to the GBA which was issued on Friday and signed by Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey, the NPP Chair maintained, their MPs will not be part of the process to ratify any appointments made by President Mahama, whose electoral victory they are challenging at the Supreme Court, but they [NPP MPs] will take part in debates on the floor of the House.
Speaking on News File Saturday, however, the former Volta River Authority Boss said the NPP’s response as captured in the reply to the GBA, is “disingenuous and flows contrary to the laws of the land [the 1992 Constitution]”.
Quoting Article 108 of the 1992 Constitution to back his submission, Tarzan, as he is popularly called, maintained his earlier position that, pending the ruling of the court; the NPP MPs must stand down since they have no business being in Parliament.
Dr. Wereko-Brobby questioned if the NPP MPs will be in Parliament when the Finance Minister stands before the House to present the government’s budget to Members of Parliament, when they refused to participate in his vetting.
“You simply cannot say you will not vet ministers, but you will participate in discussions on loans, budget or whatever…Budgets are brought by the President; everything that happens in Parliament issues from the initiatives of the President who holds the executive authority,” he emphasized
