GoldBod Joins President Mahama’s National Sanitation Drive After June 29 Floods

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has joined the *Two-Day National Flood Aftermath Clean-Up Exercise, with management and staff leading a sanitation exercise at its headquarters and surrounding areas in central Accra.
Led by Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., the GoldBod team on Friday, July 10, 2026 cleaned the GoldBod Head Office and adjoining communities as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for a nationwide clean-up following the devastating floods of June 29.
Target Areas: From Headquarters To Makola
The exercise covered key public spaces around the GoldBod headquarters, including the Ghana Library Authority, SIC Mall, and parts of the Makola Market enclave.
Staff were joined by sanitation workers and volunteers to desilt drains, sweep streets, evacuate refuse, and clear debris that had accumulated after the floods.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Nunekpeku said the initiative reflects GoldBod’s commitment to environmental responsibility and national development.
“This exercise is about more than cleaning. It is about protecting public health, preventing future flooding, and showing that as an institution we are committed to the wellbeing of the communities we operate in,” he said.
Supporting Government’s Call To Action
The nationwide clean-up was announced by the Minister For Local Government, Chieftaincy And Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, on behalf of the President.
The exercise is scheduled for Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, 2026* from *6:00 Am To 1:00 Pm each day. Friday targets government institutions, private institutions, and security services, while Saturday focuses on communities and residents.
Markets, shops and commercial establishments within affected areas have been directed to remain closed during the exercise hours to allow for full participation.
GoldBod said its participation demonstrates how public institutions can lead by example in enforcing sanitation bye-laws and promoting cleaner cities.
“Cleanliness Is Key To National Development”
Mr. Nunekpeku emphasized that environmental cleanliness directly impacts productivity, health, and investor confidence.
“As GoldBod, we regulate and promote the gold industry, but we also have a responsibility to the environment and to Ghanaians. A clean environment supports business, protects lives, and contributes to national development,” he noted.
He commended staff for turning out in their numbers and urged other corporate institutions to support the national drive.
The Deputy CEO also called on traders and residents around Makola to maintain the cleaned areas and avoid indiscriminate waste disposal that blocks drains and causes flooding.
National Effort Continues
The Two-Day National Flood Aftermath Clean-Up Exercise forms part of government’s broader strategy to restore sanitation, clear flood debris, and minimize future flood risks across the country.
Waste management companies, MMDAs, security services, and community groups are all participating in the exercise nationwide.
GoldBod assured the public that it will continue to support sanitation and public health initiatives beyond the two-day exercise.
“We are not just cleaning today. We are building a culture of cleanliness that must continue in our offices, markets, and homes,” Mr. Nunekpeku added.
