HAJIA SAFIA: I Will Re-Energise NPP Women To Win Back Our Seats In 2028
The race for leadership positions in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially heated up as aspirants for the party’s 2026 National Officers Elections filed their nominations at the party’s headquarters at Asylum Down in Accra, with a common message of unity, rebranding and victory in 2028.
Leading the charge on Monday was Hajia Safia Mohammed, who has formally filed her nomination to contest the position of National Women’s Organiser of the NPP.
Hajia Safia, who previously served as Deputy National Women’s Organiser, was accompanied by a large crowd of party women, youth organisers, constituency executives and supporters who thronged the headquarters in party colours, chanting and singing NPP anthems.
Addressing supporters and the media after successfully going through the vetting of her documents, Hajia Safia said her decision to contest was born out of a deep commitment to re-energise the women’s wing of the party, which she described as the backbone of the NPP’s electoral fortunes.
According to her, the 2024 general elections exposed cracks in the party’s grassroots mobilisation, particularly among women, leading to the loss of several parliamentary seats that were considered safe seats for the party.
“Our women stood with the NPP through thick and thin. Today, many of them feel left out and demotivated. My mission is to go back to the base, listen to them, rebuild their confidence and bring every single woman back on board,” she stated.
She noted that if given the nod as National Women’s Organiser, her first task would be a comprehensive outreach programme across all 16 regions to reconcile aggrieved women groups, empower TESCON ladies in tertiary institutions, and create sustainable economic support schemes for market women and women’s groups affiliated to the party.
Hajia Safia also used the occasion to call for unity within the NPP, stressing that the party cannot go into the 2028 general elections divided.
“We have suffered a painful defeat. This is not the time for personal interests, accusations and blame games. This is the time for us to forgive each other, put aside our divisions and unite as one family with a common purpose – to recapture power in 2028,” she appealed.
She pledged to work with whoever emerges as flagbearer and other national executives to ensure that the NPP presents a united front to Ghanaians.
The filing of nominations comes at a crucial time when the NPP is seeking to reorganise after its defeat in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, which saw the party lose power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after eight years in office.
According to the timetable released by the party’s National Elections Committee, chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, nomination forms were opened earlier this month and vetting is expected to commence in the coming days, with the National Delegates Conference slated for early 2026.
Other aspirants who have also picked and filed nominations for various positions including National Organiser, National Youth Organiser, General Secretary and National Nasara Coordinator are all expected to file before the deadline this week.
Party officials at the headquarters say the atmosphere has been largely peaceful and orderly, with aspirants being advised to conduct clean campaigns devoid of insults and personal attacks.
Many political analysts believe the upcoming national officers elections will be a defining moment for the NPP, as the quality of leaders elected will determine how effectively the party can reconnect with its base, win back floating voters and mount a credible challenge in the 2028 polls.
For Hajia Safia, the message is clear: the women of the NPP are ready to lead the charge.
“When NPP women are energised, NPP wins. When NPP women move, victory follows. In 2028, we will show Ghana that the elephant is still a winning force,” she declared to loud cheers from her supporters.
