Floods Knock Out Key Accra Substations as GRIDCo, ECG Warn of More Power Interruptions

PRESS RELEASE
Heavy flooding caused by persistent rains has forced the temporary shutdown of two major electricity substations in Accra, with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) warning that more areas could experience power outages if conditions worsen.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, June 29, 2026, the two power utilities announced that the Mallam and Achimota primary substations had been taken offline as a precautionary measure after floodwaters inundated critical electricity infrastructure.
According to GRIDCo and ECG, the flooding poses serious risks to electrical equipment and operational personnel, making the temporary shutdown necessary to safeguard lives, protect property, and prevent extensive damage to the national power network.
The utilities said engineers are closely monitoring the situation and conducting detailed assessments of the affected transmission and distribution facilities before power can be safely restored.
They further cautioned that as heavy rains continue across parts of the Greater Accra Region, additional substations may also be temporarily switched off wherever flooding creates safety concerns.
GRIDCo and ECG urged the public to remain vigilant by avoiding flooded electrical installations and immediately reporting fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines, and other electricity-related hazards to the nearest ECG office or through its customer service channels.
The two institutions apologised to customers for the inconvenience and assured the public that every effort would be made to restore electricity supply as soon as weather conditions improve and it is safe to do so.
