JUST IN: Education Ministry establishes committee to investigate rising tertiary hostel fees

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has set up a committee to examine rising concerns over the increasing cost of hostel accommodation in tertiary institutions nationwide.

The decision follows numerous complaints from students who say hostel fees have become excessively high, with limited bed spaces and growing difficulties in finding affordable and decent accommodation on campuses. Many students and parents have expressed worry that the situation is placing a heavy financial burden on families.

Mr. Iddrisu made the announcement during the swearing-in ceremony of the governing councils of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, where he assured stakeholders that government would take steps to promote fairness and affordability in student housing.

He explained that the committee will consult key stakeholders, including university authorities, private hostel operators, student representatives, and regulatory bodies, to assess the challenges and recommend workable solutions.

The minister stressed that government would not allow unchecked pricing in the sector, adding that public policy must reflect social equity and the needs of students.

“This government will not operate purely on private partnership principles where unlimited fee guidelines determine outcomes. We will ensure that social values and concerns are reflected in the delivery of this public good,” he stated.

The move comes amid growing national debate over hostel pricing and renewed calls for stronger regulation and increased investment in student accommodation infrastructure across the country.
