“Bring Your Lawyers or Cross-Examine Yourselves”-Court Tells Adu-Boahene, Wife

The High Court in Accra has directed former National Signals Bureau Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, to ensure their lawyers are present at the next hearing or cross-examine the prosecution’s fourth witness themselves.

Justice Francis Apangabuno Achibonga issued the directive on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, after lead defence counsel Samuel Atta Akyea and his team failed to appear in court.

Adu-Boahene told the court he had struggled to reach his lawyer and understood that Mr Atta Akyea and his team were marking examination scripts outside Accra. He said he was unsure whether his lead counsel was within the jurisdiction.

Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai said defence counsel had written to the Chief Justice, the court’s Registrar and the Ghana Bar Association regarding his decision not to attend proceedings during the legal vacation.

The judge said such correspondence did not suspend proceedings, noting that he had been authorised by the Chief Justice to sit during the vacation.

However, Justice Achibonga said it would be unfair to force the accused persons to cross-examine the witness without legal representation.

The case was adjourned to August 17. The judge warned that if the accused remain unrepresented, they will have to conduct the cross-examination themselves, or the witness will be discharged.

The accused persons have pleaded not guilty to 11 charges and are on bail.
