Airport name change will not affect tourism – Hospitality expert

Story: Maurice Otoo

A tourism and hospitality expert Professor Ishahaku has dismissed concerns that a change in the name of Ghana’s main international airport could negatively impact the country’s tourism industry.

In a zoom meeting on Kessben TV’s Digest, the lecturer in Tourism Management and Hospitality, airports play a major role in boosting tourism, but their names do not necessarily determine whether tourists choose a destination.

He explained that many international travelers are largely indifferent to the specific names of airports, noting that some visitors may not even know the personalities after whom such facilities are named.

“Changing the name of an airport does not have any negative impact on tourism because many tourists do not even pay attention to the name. Some do not even know who the airport is named after,” he stated.

The expert further stressed that what truly influences tourists’ decisions is not the name of an airport, but the overall travel experience, quality of service, and the country’s attractions.

He noted that Ghana’s main international gateway, now, Accra International Airport, remains one of the best in West Africa in terms of facilities and infrastructure.

“The facilities at our airport make it one of the best in West Africa. What matters most is the quality of service from immigration officers and other service providers,” he added.

He emphasized that efficient service delivery, professionalism, and a welcoming environment are key factors that shape tourists’ impressions and determine whether they will return or recommend Ghana as a destination.

The lecturer concluded that national discussions on airport naming should not overshadow the broader goal of improving service standards and strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading tourism hub in the sub-region.
