Founder of Kessben University, Stephen Boateng Esq narrates how he converted his lakeside resort into a University to serve student backlog in Ghana

At the maiden edition of the Stephen Boateng Esq Public lecture held last Saturday in Kumasi, the Founder of Kessben University, Stephen Boateng Esq, shared the remarkable story of how the institution came into being.
In his address, he revealed that Kessben University was originally a resort, Kessben Resort, situated around the scenic Lake Bosomtwe, designed to serve as a hospitality and leisure destination.
However, in 2015, Ghana faced a significant backlog of qualified students struggling to gain admission into tertiary institutions. Mr. Boateng explained that the national challenge demanded innovative solutions, and he felt compelled to act.
“I had to convert my Kessben Resort around Lake Bosomtwe to Kessben University in 2015 to fill in the student backlog in tertiary education in Ghana,” he recounted.
According to him, the decision, though unconventional, was driven by a deep commitment to supporting Ghana’s educational growth. Transforming the resort into an academic institution required extensive restructuring, regulatory approvals, and substantial investment, but Mr. Boateng believed the sacrifice was necessary to offer more young people access to higher education.
The lecture, which attracted academics, students, policymakers, and dignitaries, highlighted not only the inspiring origins of Kessben University but also the importance of visionary leadership in solving national problems.
