Ghana is too much about Theory – Lawyer Kwabena Nketiah Antwi laments after Adansi helicopter crash

Lawyer Kwabena Nketiah, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communication team, has criticized what he describes as Ghana’s over-reliance on theoretical knowledge at the expense of practical skills and on-the-ground competence.

His comments came in the wake of the Adansi helicopter crash that shocked the nation earlier this month and exposed deep flaws in Ghana’s technical response systems.

Speaking during a radio panel discussion on Kessben FM, Nketiah recounted a personal story to illustrate the disconnect between education and real-life problem-solving in the country.

“Ghana is too much about theory,” he said, “A mechanical engineer had to call a mechanic at Kumasi Magazine to fix his car, not knowing it was just a fuel shortage.”

Kumasi Magazine, a well-known industrial and mechanical hub in Ghana, has long been home to some of the country’s most skilled artisans, many of whom have no formal education but possess vast practical knowledge. Nketiah used the incident to underscore what he sees as the country’s misplaced emphasis on academic qualifications over technical proficiency.

But it was the recent Adansi helicopter crash, which claimed three lives and injured several others, that brought Nketiah’s concerns to the forefront. According to him, Ghana’s inability to respond effectively to the crash without seeking help from international partners was a clear indicator that the country’s institutions are more theoretical than operationally capable.
