Attorney General’s Conduct in Adu Boahen Case Draws Criticism from NPP Legal Team MemberLawyer, Kwasi Botchwey Jnr

Lawyer Kwasi Botchwey Jnr, a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team, has raised concerns about the Attorney General’s handling of the corruption case involving former National Signals Bureau (NSB) head, Kwabena Adu Boahen. Speaking to Kessben TV on Maakye show, Botchwey criticized what he described as a “media trial” orchestrated by the Attorney General, arguing that such public commentary could prejudice judicial proceedings.

Botchwey questioned the consistency of the Attorney General’s approach, noting that despite earlier assertions of possessing a “watertight” case against Adu Boahen, the prosecution requested additional time to complete investigations. He emphasized that the Attorney General’s role is to present evidence in court, not to convict individuals through the media.

Highlighting the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence, Botchwey cautioned that Attorney General’s declarations labeling Adu Boahen and his wife as criminals could undermine the legal process and potentially lead to public vilification of the judiciary should the court’s verdict not align with public expectations.

He urged the Attorney General to focus on court proceedings and respect the legal process, emphasizing that convictions should result from judicial deliberations, not public opinion.

Kwabena Adu Boahen has been remanded into the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for seven days, with the case adjourned to May 13, 2025, to allow the prosecution to complete its preparation of witness statements.

The case continues to attract public attention, with legal experts and political figures weighing in on the implications of the Attorney General’s conduct for the rule of law and judicial independence in Ghana.
