Ghanaian Evacuee From South Africa Dies On Arrival At Accra Airport
One of the 50 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa has died shortly after arriving at the Accra International Airport in Accra on Friday evening, August 14, 2026.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the incident in a press release, saying the deceased collapsed at the Emergency Medical Reception at 6:55pm, despite efforts by airport medical personnel to save him.
Health Deteriorated Mid-Flight
According to the Ministry, the group of 50 evacuees arrived aboard an Air Tanzania flight at 5:50pm as part of the Government’s ongoing evacuation exercise from South Africa.
Reports from other passengers indicated that the deceased’s health began to deteriorate about 30 minutes before the flight touched down in Accra.
A medical emergency team that was on standby at the airport immediately attended to him upon arrival.
“Regrettably the deceased passed away and was confirmed dead by doctors at 6:55pm after all attempts failed,” the Ministry stated.
Body Deposited For Autopsy
The Ministry said it is undertaking the formalities of informing the family of the deceased.
The remains have since been deposited at the Police Hospital for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Government To Update Family First
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed deep sadness over the loss and said it will provide a further update on the matter after formal engagement with the bereaved family.
The evacuation exercise is part of government efforts to bring home Ghanaians affected by recent developments in South Africa.
