SAD NEWS: Asantehene has officially been informed of the demise of Mamponghene – Details

His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has been officially informed of the passing of the Mamponghene, Dasebre Osei Bonsu II, one of the most powerful traditional leaders in the Ashanti Kingdom. The notification was done in strict adherence to Asante custom and tradition, which places great importance on protocol in matters involving the chieftaincy.
According to reports, the Mamponghene died last week Tuesday at age 86, though as tradition dictates, the official announcement and communication to the Asantehene were made only after the appropriate rituals and consultations had been carried out. The identity of the deceased Mamponghene is traditionally withheld from the public until all necessary traditional rites are completed.
The role of Mamponghene is particularly significant in the Asante Kingdom. As the second-in-command to the Asantehene, the Mamponghene serves not only as a senior traditional ruler but also as the Kumawuhene (guardian) of the Asante stool in the absence of the Asantehene. His passing marks a moment of both reflection and transition within the traditional leadership structure of the Ashanti Region.
The Mampong Traditional Area, one of the most influential in the Ashanti Kingdom, will now enter a state of mourning, with black and red regalia expected to be worn across the area in the coming days.
Traditional drumming and dancing will be replaced by ceremonial dirges, and plans are expected to commence soon for the final funeral rites.
The death of the Mamponghene marks the end of an era, and many are awaiting further announcements from Manhyia regarding funeral arrangements and the traditional process for installing a successor.
