NPP Council of Elders Mourns Odoi-Sykes: “We Have Lost An Elder Statesman”

The National Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Ambassador Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes.
In a statement dated October 9, 2026, and signed by Vice Chairman Alhaji Sulemana Yirimea, the Council described the late Odoi-Sykes as a true patriot, statesman and distinguished son of Ghana.
“His life was marked by dedicated service to the Nation, the New Patriotic Party and the cause of Constitutional Democracy,” the statement said.
Ambassador Odoi-Sykes served in many important capacities including Member of Parliament for Ashiedu Keteke, now Odododiodoo, Minority Leader of Parliament, and National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party from 1998 to 2001.
The Council noted that as one of the founding fathers of the NPP, he made significant contributions to building and strengthening the party and was at the helm when the party achieved its historic electoral victory in 2000.
He later served Ghana with distinction as High Commissioner to Canada from 2001 to 2006.
“Throughout his public life, he offered wise counsel, principled leadership and a deep commitment to the development of Ghana and its democratic institutions,” the Council stated.
The Council said Odoi-Sykes was also a valued member of the National Council of Elders, adding that although ill health had in recent times limited his active participation, his place and immense contribution remained recognized.
“His passing is a great loss to the National Council of Elders. It is a loss to the New Patriotic Party and to Ghana as a whole. We have lost an elder statesman whose experience, wisdom, humility and commitment to public service will be deeply missed,” the statement said.
On behalf of the Council, Alhaji Yirimea extended deepest condolences to his wife, children, the entire Odoi-Sykes family, friends and associates, praying for strength and comfort for them.
“May we also find comfort in the knowledge that Ambassador Samuel Arthur Odoi-Sykes lived a life of service to God, country and Party. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
