We are Headed to Serious Trouble – Kwasi Kyei Slams The President’s Approach on Chief Justice Suspension

Former Ashanti Regional Communications Director for the NPP, Dr. Kwasi Kyei has spoken out against the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, describing the action as a sign of growing “cruelty” from the President and his administration toward the judiciary.
Speaking on Kessben FM’s Maakye show, Kyei criticized the manner in which the suspension was handled and stated that it showed a disregard for the independence of the judiciary. According to him, members of the judicial system are simply doing their jobs, and this suspension seems both unnecessary and unfair.
“If one arm of government starts to dominate the others, especially the judiciary, we’re headed for serious trouble,” he warned. Dr. Kyei also questioned the timing of the action, pointing out that discussions around issues involving the former Chief Justice are still unresolved. Also, the committee set up to look into the current case hasn’t even started its work.
He further criticized members of the opposition NDC for making public accusations before the facts have been fully investigated.
The suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo came after five separate petitions were submitted, prompting the President to act in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution. The Chief Justice was given ten days to respond to the petitions, and she submitted her reply on April 7.
After reviewing her response and consulting the Council of State, the President concluded that there was enough basis for further investigation. A five-member committee has now been formed to look into the matter.
However, the exact reasons behind the petitions and the suspension have not been made public, sparking national debate. Politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties have shared opinions, but are split over whether the move is justified or politically motivated.
