New Cocoa Gold Mining Laws: NDC appears to respect mining more than Cocoa – Kwabre East MP, Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina-Acheampong

The Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Hon. Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina-Acheampong, has criticised the government’s new Cocoa Gold Mining laws, arguing that the legislation suggests the National Democratic Congress (NDC) places greater importance on mining than cocoa.
Speaking on Kessben FM, the Kwabre East MP said the NDC’s numerical strength in Parliament allows it to pass legislation according to its preferred position, even when there are concerns from the opposition.
“With the new Cocoa Gold Mining laws, it appears the NDC respects mining more than cocoa. They have the numbers, so they use them to do what they want,” he said.
Hon. Gyamfi Onyina-Acheampong’s comments come amid discussions over the potential impact of the new laws on Ghana’s cocoa sector and the livelihoods of cocoa farmers.
He maintained that the interests of cocoa farmers and the sustainability of the cocoa industry must remain a priority in policymaking.
