Following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko fan Francis Frimpong, also known as Pooley, during a match between Kotoko and Nsoatreman FC, Kwame Boafo, a former lawyer for Kotoko, has spoken out about what he believes is a longstanding issue of unfair treatment of the two biggest clubs in Ghanaian football—Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak—when playing away from home.
Kwame Boafo, who represented Kotoko during legal battles in the past speaking on Kessben TV with Sir Joe Laka made a strong statement, claiming that Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are consistently subjected to unfair treatment in away games more than any other teams in Ghana Premier League. According to Boafo, these two clubs often face biased refereeing decisions that hinder their performance, including excessive bookings and questionable penalty calls against them.
Boafo’s comments shed light on what he sees as a recurring problem in the Ghanaian football landscape: referees showing more leniency to home teams while penalizing the two most successful clubs in the league. He believes that this disparity in officiating is a significant factor that contributes to Kotoko and Hearts’ struggles when playing away from home, making it harder for them to secure positive results.
Boafo’s comments come after the death of Pooley, which has amplified conversations about the state of the sport in Ghana. The lawyer emphasized that the biased treatment of Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, particularly in away fixtures, is a direct blow to the integrity of the game. He suggested that this type of unfair treatment could affect both the morale of players and the overall competitive balance in the league.
According to Boafo, the constant refereeing inconsistencies make it difficult for these clubs to compete at their best.
Boafo stressed that both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak deserve better treatment as any other team in the league, with impartial refereeing that prioritizes fair play above all else.
He also added that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) needs to introduce more comprehensive monitoring and accountability measures to ensure that referees are not influenced by any external factors or biases.
