Tuchel’s ‘DNA’ Comments Spark Debate After England’s World Cup Semi-Final Defeat

Thomas Tuchel has raised eyebrows with his comments following England’s disappointing World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina.
After seeing his team surrender a 1-0 lead and eventually fall to defeat, the England manager suggested that possession and controlling the game with the ball were key factors in the result.
“I think ball possession plays a crucial role,” Tuchel explained when reflecting on the match. “Maybe it is not in our DNA like it is in Spanish DNA or in Argentine-Brazilian DNA, to take the ball and control the game through possession.”
Tuchel also admitted that, in his view, no tactical system could have prevented the collapse once Argentina gained control of the match.
“In this moment, my feeling was no structure in the world could have helped us,” he added.
The comments have sparked a wider discussion among football fans and analysts. Some believe Tuchel has identified a genuine issue within English football—the traditional struggle to dominate possession against technically gifted teams such as Argentina, Spain, and Brazil.
Others argue that the remarks sound like an excuse, particularly given the manager’s controversial decisions during the semi-final, including his substitutions and tactical adjustments as England attempted to protect their lead.
The debate now centres on whether Tuchel is correctly identifying a long-standing weakness in England’s football identity or avoiding responsibility for decisions that contributed to their elimination.
With expectations high and England once again falling short on the biggest stage, Tuchel’s explanation is a major talking point long after the final whistle.
