Pressure mounts on KATH emergency unit as patients face prolonged waiting times – Caregiver shares ordeal

Concerns over overcrowding at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) emergency unit have resurfaced following reports of delays in attending to patients at the facility’s Accident and Emergency Centre.

Speaking on Kessben FM, someone who had accompanied a patient to the hospital alleged that they were forced to wait for several hours before receiving medical attention due to congestion and a shortage of available beds.

He described the situation as an example of the persistent “No Bed Syndrome” affecting some major health facilities, where patients face delays in admission and treatment because of limited capacity.

The report comes amid growing concerns about pressure on KATH, one of Ghana’s largest referral hospitals, which serves patients from the Ashanti Region and several other parts of the country.

Healthcare stakeholders have repeatedly called for increased investment in health infrastructure and the expansion of medical facilities to ease the burden on major referral hospitals and improve access to emergency care.
