Afenyo’s Speech Becoming One Too Many – CPP’s Ato Dadzie Warns Against Reckless Political Rhetoric
By Maurice Otoo
General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, Citizen Ato Dadzie, has cautioned political leaders against inflammatory rhetoric, warning that freedom of speech has clear limits when it threatens national security and public order.
Speaking on Kessben Maakye’s show in Accra about recent political tensions, Dadzie stressed that democratic freedoms must be exercised responsibly.
“There are limitations to freedom of speech in every part of the world. If your speech borders on national security, you can’t get away with it. Some borders on moralities,” he stated.
According to him, Section 208 of Ghana’s Criminal Offenses Act clearly outlines the boundaries of acceptable public commentary and conduct.
The CPP scribe took particular aim at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accusing him of repeatedly crossing the line with his public utterances.
“His ashes of speech are becoming one too many,” Dadzie remarked.
While acknowledging Afenyo-Markin’s contributions to his constituency, Dadzie argued that his political style has become divisive and confrontational. He alleged that several people within the New Patriotic Party were intimidated or sidelined for opposing the Minority Leader in his Constituency.
Dadzie also referenced a past demonstration during which Afenyo-Markin was accused of slapping a police officer, saying the lawmaker once praised the judiciary but now appears dissatisfied with the same institution.
“Even some of your people have realized you went overboard,” he added.
Citizen Ato Dadzie urged political actors to demonstrate emotional intelligence and restraint in public discourse, especially in periods of heightened political tension.
He suggested that Afenyo-Markin’s recent posture may be linked to attempts to gain acceptance within former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s political camp while defending outspoken NPP figure Kwame Baffoe.
Dadzie further questioned whether outspoken businessman and politician Kennedy Agyapong would approve of Afenyo-Markin’s recent conduct, considering the relationship they share, juxtaposed with what Abronye did to Kennedy Agyapong.
