Energy Sector Struggles Persist: Dr. Peter Tekpeh’s Insights on Kessben TV’s Digest Show

In a recent appearance on Kessben TV’s Digest show, Dr. Peter Tekpeh, a renowned expert in the energy sector, shed light on the ongoing power outages and the challenges facing Ghana’s energy infrastructure.

Despite efforts by successive governments to address the crisis, Dr. Tekpeh highlighted that the problem remains persistent due to a lack of long-term structural solutions and capacity building.

According to Dr. Tekpeh, while there has been progress, the development in the energy sector has been more focused on short-term fixes rather than a holistic, 360° approach that includes growth, infrastructure, and sustainability.

He emphasized that the nation’s development agenda has historically been driven by short-term political goals rather than aligning with the needs of the growing population.

“We have not done well in terms of growth and development. Our focus has primarily been on infrastructure, and this is where we are failing,” Dr. Tekpeh remarked.

He noted that while the replacement of outdated transformers and other infrastructure upgrades are necessary, they do not offer a long-term solution if they are not part of a larger, coordinated plan.

Dr. Tekpeh also pointed out that while expanding generation capacity at places, he proposes consideration of expanding the Akosombo Dam. There has been a lack of forward-thinking regarding future energy demands and sustainable solutions, he added.

“If we don’t align our planning with actual population growth and future energy needs, we will continue to face the same problems in the future,” he warned.
