Sam George announces major 5G reforms to boost competition; MTN commits $1.1bn
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced sweeping reforms to Ghana’s 5G framework aimed at boosting competition and accelerating high-speed connectivity.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, the Minister said the National Communications Authority (NCA) has removed the wholesale 5G exclusivity model that previously constrained competition in the market.
He disclosed that following the decision, the NCA has issued Requests for Applications for spectrum in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz bands, a move that opens up the space for new entrants and fresh investment.
According to the Minister, the reforms are already yielding results.
“MTN Ghana has committed more than US$1.1 billion over the next three years to expand coverage, deploy new sites and support the 5G rollout,” Hon. Sam George announced.
He assured Ghanaians that government will complete the assignment of 5G spectrum before the end of the year, paving the way for full commercial deployment across the country.
The wholesale exclusivity model under the previous administration had faced criticism from industry players who argued it stifled competition and delayed Ghana’s 5G progress compared to regional peers.
The new open spectrum approach is expected to drive down data costs, improve quality of service and accelerate digital inclusion, the Minister said.
