Our Democracy Is Under Serious Threat – George Krobea Asante

Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has described the attempted arrest of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, as an undemocratic move to intimidate the patriotic Member of Parliament.
Speaking on Maakye on Kessben TV, George Krobea Asante described the attempted arrest of Rev. John Ntim Fordjour by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) as an attack on Ghana’s democracy and freedom of speech.
“Our democracy is under serious threat. What is happening is unacceptable and must be condemned. If we continue like this, Ghana will be heading in a very dangerous direction,” he cautioned.
He stressed that the comments made by the Assin South MP regarding the recent alleged drug trafficking incident at Kotoka International Airport were not made in isolation, but reflected the collective stance of the Minority Caucus.
“Let me put it on record, Honourable Ntim Fordjour did not speak as an individual MP. He spoke on behalf of the entire 88 Minority MPs. If anyone thinks they can arrest him for speaking the truth, then they should be prepared to arrest all 88 of them,” he said.
Citing the 1992 Constitution, George Krobea Asante reminded authorities that the right to free expression is protected by law.
“Article 21 Clause 1 of our Constitution guarantees freedom of expression. So what wrong has he committed by raising concerns that are in the interest of national security and public safety?”
He described the NIBs’ actions as a form of intimidation meant to suppress dissent and urged the public and institutions to stand up against such abuses of power.
“The concerns Ntim Fordjour raised were in the interest of the good people of Ghana. We cannot build a democratic nation by intimidating Members of Parliament for doing their job,” he stated.
