Spain signs law allowing menstrual leave

According to a new sexual and reproductive health law that took effect on Thursday, women in Spain now have the legal right to take time off from work throughout their menstrual cycle.

A number of changes have been made to the “Gender Equality Bill,” which was proposed by the left-wing government and adopted by parliament in February.

According to the law, women workers in Spain just need to provide a doctor’s certificate to request menstruation leave.

The duration of this leave is, in principle, unlimited.

Following the parliamentary vote, Equality Minister Irene Montero expressed her sentiments, stating,

“Today marks a historic day for the advancement of feminist rights.”

According to the law, the length of the leave is determined by the severity and duration of menstrual pain experienced by the individual.
