Low stadium attendance: No matter how you publicize your games on Twitter, your followers can’t come to Baba Yara, they live in New York, London etc – Franko Naro

Even though social media has become a great tool in today’s world, Franko Naro has cognitively explained why social media can’t drive supporters to stadiums in the Ghanaian setting.

The experienced sports journalist speaking with Kwame Mekke on Kessben FM’s Midfield Action noted that the low stadium attendance of the Ghana Premier League is a result of social media alone which has predominantly become the primary tool for Asante Kotoko and some other clubs to communicate to their fans.

Naro comprehended that for a social media follower of Asante Kotoko who lives in New York, Manchester, London etc, no matter how you publicize games, the fellow can’t just be in the stadium to watch the game therefore there must be the need and urgency also use the traditional media which has been a proven method to get the fans to the stadium.

“First of all this is a league in which it was said that GHC1 million has been invested in publicity. We don’t see any publicity so if the attendance is low the first point of questioning should be how they are using it to publicize it.

Now put that one aside, the clubs themselves also have a major role to play. Go to Hearts of Oak, Opare my own friend, the Communication manager is too relaxed. There are several media guys saying they will call him but he won’t pick up.

At Kotoko, their mindset is that social media is going to be used to publicize the games but that has fallen into the water.

They believe that it is not necessary to go from radio station to radio station to promote the game, they believe it is not necessary to sponsor fans to engage in phone-ins to create awareness of their games, they think if you just make a flier about the game and post on social media people will come to the stadium.

Look, the people who are following you on social media, most of them are living in New York, London, Manchester, etc so no matter how you publicize the games, they can’t come to Baba Yara” Naro said.
