Messi or Ronaldo? Piers Morgan ranks the four best players in history

Piers Morgan still thinks Lionel Messi is only the fourth-best player in history despite his masterclass for Argentina against Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.

Messi scored his fifth goal of the tournament and provided a stunning assist as Argentina reached the World Cup final with a 3-0 victory.

Recently, the TV personality conducted an infamous interview with Ronaldo that shook the world. It led to the Portuguese star leaving Manchester United after he criticised the club and manager, Erik ten Hag.

And while Ronaldo’s World Cup campaign ended in tears and a role as a substitute for Portugal, Messi has almost single-handedly hauled Argentina to the final with a string of virtuoso performances.

For many football fans, this tournament has ended the GOAT debate in Messi’s favour.

Who is the greatest footballer ever?

But Morgan is staying loyal.

During Messi’s masterclass against Croatia, Morgan was bombarded with tweets asking whether he’s still Team Ronaldo.

“Is there still a debate? Asking for a goat,” Lineker tweeted.

“There isn’t. It’s Ronaldo,” came the reply from Morgan.

Then came Jeff Stelling who tweeted: “So where are we now @piersmorgan in the Ronaldo v Messi debate?”

It led Morgan to tweet his ranking of the four best players in the history of football, with Messi in fourth.

No prizes for guessing who was in at No.1…

“I think Cristiano Ronaldo’s the best ever, Maradona 2nd, Messi 3rd (possibly 4th actually, behind R9),” Morgan said.

Morgan: One World Cup doesn’t make Messi the GOAT

Morgan doubled down on his opinion when appearing on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning.

“I thought Messi was absolutely sensational against Croatia,” Morgan admitted He’s one of the greatest players to ever play the game. The debate is, though, is he the greatest?

“On that I will always put up a very passionate and quite forensic defence of Ronaldo. I think he deserves that title.

“One World Cup does not a GOAT make. Messi hasn’t even won it yet!

“When you look at the stats between Ronaldo and Messi, it’s important to remember Ronaldo is two years’ older.

“It’s also important to remember that, unlike Messi who stayed in his Barcelona comfort blanket for 17 years, Ronaldo has won league titles in four different countries, including the three most competitive leagues in the world.

“He’s taken himself out of comfort zones – he could have stayed at Real Madrid for most of his career if he wanted to, but he’s deliberately taken himself into new leagues and new challenges.

“Whereas Messi, he’s only ever done it for Barcelona, and there all around him the entire time were the world’s greatest players. Ronaldo has often had to lead that line pretty much on his own.”
