Komenda Sugar Factory: Sugar importers worked with Gov’t to ensure that the factory won’t work – Project Secretary (Video)

Former project secretary of the Komenda Sugar Factory, Ransford Vanni has revealed that some importers of sugar in Ghana ensured that the factory won’t be functional.

The Komenda Sugar Factory which was in 2016 revamped at a cost of $35 million from an Indian EXIM Bank facility has virtually turned to be a white elephant after its completion.

This is due to a number of challenges which had to do with ready raw materials from outgrowers in Ghana.

Ransford Vanni speaking on Kessben TV’s Maakye with Kwame Appiah Kubi revealed that there were some importers who were also working with Government to ensure that the factory won’t work.

“Because of their business as sugar importers, they tried to stop the factory from operating. There were working with Government to ensure that the factory won’t work.

That was their interest, it was not about farming to have the raw materials but importing them” He said.

President Akufo-Addo, however, had apparently given indications that the Komenda Sugar Factory would be fully operationalised in April 2022 but unfortunately, it is currently now running a run test.
