Incumbent Member of Parliament for Akwatia Baba Jamal will be representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2016 parliamentary elections.
Jamal polled 3,653 votes as against his main rival Basil Ahiable’s 2016 to stand on the ticket of the ruling party in the Eastern regional constituency.
The total valid votes cast were 5,767 out of expected voting population of 8,058. The rejected ballots were 98.
Speaking to his teeming supporters after the official declaration, Jamal said he was “overwhelmed,” saying the victory is “not for Baba Jamal, but for everyone.”
He called for “unity within the party” in order to snatch victory in the general polls.
“2016 elections start from today,” he said. “The issue about violence must be discouraged… I am most grateful to my campaign team and all the stakeholders in this primaries and all those behind me.”
The primary in the constituency was called off last year over security concerns. The ruling party elected its Presidential and parliamentary candidates in November 2015.
