Stars Hold Flight Hostage
The Black Stars last Thursday defied aviation rules at the Kotoka International Airport by holding their chartered aircraft hostage for two solid hours.
The mutiny, led by skipper of the side Asamoah Gyan and his lieutenant Dede Ayew, was to press home the demand for their unpaid accruing allowances.
Revelations from the team’s hotel base (Best Western Premier Hotel) in Airport indicated that it took the intervention of senior brother of Gyan, Baffour and Fiifi Tackie, an aid to the Ayews, for the two leaders to rescind their decision.
Earlier, the team held a series of meetings regarding their accumulated unpaid bonuses vis-Ã -vis the proposed pay cut of $5,000 instead of the usual $10,000 winning bonus. And they concluded that they will play the Comoros World Cup qualifier on condition that their financial entitlements in the Ghana-Togo international friendly, Ghana-Mauritius, the Ghana-Rwanda qualifier as well as their bonus slash issue will be sorted out.
It emerged that the players refused to grant audience to the Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mustapha Ahmed, let alone listen to him, when the latter attempted to convince the players to get on board due to pressure from the pilot.
It also emerged that the two-hour delay of the chartered flight will cost the nation thousands of dollars.
The team eventually left for the game scheduled for today under compulsion and are expected to return for the second leg tomorrow in Kumasi
